The Surprising Complexity of Using Leading Lines in Photographic Composition

Many people get into photography with no art background.

You might tell yourself, “Hey I know how to operate a camera.” Why would I want that?

Communication is the key.

It is not enough to be able to write a sentence. You need to have the knowledge and training to become an author. This will allow you to communicate your message in the best way to the largest audience possible.

Having a bit of knowledge about art can sometimes be as damaging as knowing nothing at all.

Composition is one of the different levels of training in art.

Today I will be talking about “leading lines”, a composition tool.

Leading lines are an essential tool for composition. They’re a concept most photographers can grasp. There are many different types of lines: horizontal, diagonal, vertical, etc.

Many photographers do not use leading lines creatively or correctly. They may even fail to recognize when they are ruining their composition. Landscape and portrait photography offer many opportunities to use vertical or horizontal leading lines. Natural lines can be used in any genre, and man-made ones are also possible.

We’ll look at some leading line examples and talk about what works and doesn’t. I’ll include a discussion of a very sophisticated use for leading lines.
