The Relevance of Travel Photography Today: Is It Still a Valid Genre?

Travel photography has been around for almost as long as photography itself. The genre has existed almost as long photography. Does it have a future in 2024 or not? Is travel photography still popular? This article will probably be a rambling rant about a genre I’ve been doing for more than 30 years.

Before we discuss its relevance to today, it might be helpful to define what it actually is.

What is Travel Photography?

Wikipedia’s page on travel photography describes it as: “is a type of photography which may include the documentation of a region’s people, culture, customs and history”. While I dislike using Wiki as a default, this definition is a good one.

A genre’s definition will always be subjective. One of my own mantras is to “capture and convey the essence” of a particular location to someone from afar.

In my travel photographs, I have almost always focused on the landscapes, whether urban or rural. The history and customs are also important. Although I am an introvert, it is difficult for me to shoot people. However, when I do, the results are amazing.
